Volvo Penta Duo Props Type F: The Stainless Steel Advantage

Volvo Duo Prop Type F has been designed for use with the DPS Drive.  This drive can also be used with Type D duo props from Volvo Penta.  The two duo prop systems are similar in several respects; for example, both can be used with gasoline engines and with diesel engines.  However, there are some important differences between them but the Volvo Duo Props Type F and the D series are in the same line.

Aluminium vs. Stainless Steel

 The first major difference is that while Type D duo props are made from aluminum, Type F Volvo Penta duo props are manufactured from stainless steel.  Since they are made of solid steel, the Type F duo props feature stronger blades; in particular, they have more torsional strength than the blades on Type D duo props.  Their fabrication from stainless steel also makes Type F Volvo Penta duo props better able to resist the damage that cavitation can cause.

In addition, the use of stainless steel for Type F duo props means that the blades themselves can be thinner than those on Type D duo props.  This is because it requires less stainless steel than aluminum to resist the same amount of force.  The blades on Type F duo props are therefore better able to efficiently transmit force.

Speeds

 The Type D duo props are only designed for use with watercraft going up to 35 knots.  The Type F duo props are more appropriate in situations where the boating enthusiast wishes to travel at speeds in excess of 35 knots.
